Present FORUM at EAA AirVenture, Resist Airport Closure and Shortening Of Runway |

July 30, 2001, Crested Butte, Colorado
Friends Of The Crested Butte Airport are participating at the EAA AirVenture 2001 and
announce a Fly-in and Safety Seminar for Saturday, August 25, 2001 to
be held at the Crested Butte Airport (3V6). Field Elevation 8,980 Ft. MSL.
Crested Butte is a small resort town between Gunnison and Aspen in Colorado. The Crested
Butte Airport was approved as a public use airport and built in 1975. The majority of the
flights operating at the airport are medical evacuations.
In a recent alliance, the Gunnison County Commissioners and a Real Estate Developer
joined forces in trying to shorten the runway by approximately 500 feet claiming to
improve flight safety. The County Commissioners also decided to restrict the usage
of the airport to a maximum of fifteen local pilots.
Because of the high airport elevation of almost 9000 feet (above Mean Sea Level), and the
thin air, any shortening of the runway would instead greatly decrease flight safety
and create a constant safety hazard.
Several pilots filed a complaint against County decisions. The recently incorporated
Friends Of The Crested Butte Airport is promoting flight safety and community awareness
with youth programs.
